Firefighter’s helmet coughs up cash By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LOOSE CHANGE from generous patrons stopping by at a hotel in Lincoln has raised more than $2000 for the town’s fire brigade. The Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade broke open a helmet of cash on Sunday, after it had

been sitting at the bar of The Famous Grouse Hotel for about 18 months. The $2040 will go towards equipment needed by the brigade. Station officer Steve McLennan said he would like to thank the patrons at the hotel for their generosity.

Mr McLennan said while the brigade gets funding from Fire and Emergency New Zealand there is always something extra needed in the community. The brigade has another helmet at the Tai Tapu Hotel and is hoping to set up others at The Laboratory and Springston Hotel.

The Famous Grouse Hotel manager Will Stock said it is good how much has been contributed and will have the helmet ready to collect further donations. “The guys do a good job so it is good to be able to give back,” he said.

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding PREBBLETON IS about to lose its community swimming pool. The pool, at Prebbleton School, is to be demolished to make way for four modern classrooms. A date has not been set for the pool’s demolition. The redevelopment will cater for the school’s rapidly growing roll, which is expected to reach 600 by 2019. The Ministry of Education is working with the school on a masterplan for its redevelopment. The new teaching spaces are scheduled to be complete in 2019 and will cost about $2 million. The unheated pool, which only operates in the summer, is owned by the MoE. The pool has not been used by the school since 2005 because it was deemed too small for the growing roll and unsuitable for taking a classroom for swimming lessons. At the time, a public meeting was called by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall to create a pool committee which set about painting, tidying and operating it. Mr Lyall said the committee and the district council managed to lease the pool off the MoE for another 12 years. •Turn to page 5

7 OCTOBER Ratepayers’ association fired up over cost of Weedons pavilion By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE DEBATE over how the new community pavilion at Weedons Reserve is funded has fired up again. The Weedons Residents’ Association committee is concerned ratepayers are bearing the brunt of the cost of a facility they may not get any use out of. A budget of about $800,000 is estimated for the new pavilion, with discussions ongoing for the last eight years. Weedons ratepayers are currently paying $14 per year towards the new pavilion and $80 towards the recreation reserve fee. Committee secretary Gary Doyle said ratepayers were initially paying $54 per year until he argued against it and the amount was reduced to $14. In the past it has been an issue, with Mr Doyle previously making a deputation to the district council alleging the Weedons Reserve Committee, which is behind the plan, is dominated by sports players. But at the time, the reserve committee’s chairman Peter Holmes said the reserve was well-represented by the

community. Mr Doyle told Selwyn Times last week it wants to build a cricket club building rather than a community facility. But Mr Holmes said this was not the case and the whole idea is for it to be a community building. The district council’s major projects property manager John Reid said discussions over contributions made by the user groups of the domain are

ongoing. He said while designs are not complete, the building will include a lounge, a small kitchen, two dressing rooms and some public toilet facilities. The issue has flared up again after information under the Local Government Official Information Act revealed the Weedons Tennis Club had made no contribution towards the cost of shifting as part of the reserve’s development. moved and realigned to allow for a larger cricket oval for the Weedons Cricket Club as part of the community pavilion redevelopment. Information from the district council’s corporate services manager Greg Bell said the tennis court upgrade cost $162,601 plus GST and 65 per cent of this is estimated to have come from ratepayers. Mr Holmes said the tennis club has put at least $2000 towards the courts upgrade. Tennis Club secretary Julie Cockburn said there is a high chance the tennis club will have to put funding into the overall upgrade because of a shortfall. Stage is set for actress and

Carla Weber of Rolleston lives and breathes musical theatre. She directed the Halswell Drama Group’s successful production of The Wedding Singer, which finished on Saturday. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding Was The Wedding Singer the first show you directed? No, I directed Nunsense for the drama group as well. Last year was the first time doing it by myself as the only director. Two or three years prior to that it was a joint effort with one or two other members of the group. We decided last year to try something different and I put my hand up and said I will direct and here I am. Have you been involved in the Halswell Drama Group for a long time? My first year was back in 2007 when I was new to the group and I got a lead role for Last Gasp at the Parched Throat Saloon and I was the head cancan dancer Miss Candy. I did have two or three years off because I was busy with family life. I became president in 2014. It has all kind of started to grow. Were you always interested in the arts? I go way back. My parents were

into shows. I can’t remember my dad being on stage but I remember seeing my mum in the orchestra pit way down in Gore. I think I went to my first show when I was about five or six and I knew sitting there, watching it and going “that is so cool,” I had to do something like that. I have always loved doing plays and my first big real show was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat back when I was a teenager. I was with the then Gore Operatic Society. They have been going since about 1967 if not before. Did you grow up in Gore? I did grow up in Gore. I lived on a farm. I never went to a high school in Gore. I went to Menzies College down in Wyndham. It was a rural high school for year 7 to 13. My father always used to say I was a towney born in the countryside by mistake. I enjoyed being around people more than the animals and the farm, so I tended to be

a little more social. I started off being on stage and I have a done a few stints of being in the Gore Operatic Society alternating on

between being on stage playing the piano, keyboard or flute. Have you played instruments up here in Canterbury? I have been teaching piano up here for a few years – piano and flute. I also played in the Canterbury Philharmonia and in the orchestra for Kirwee Players. But since I have got my wee boy Sam, I am a full time mum at the moment. I don’t have time to do much in the day which is why I tend to do theatre at night. What do you think of the arts in Selwyn? I think personally to have a drama group or a musical theatre group in Rolleston would be amazing. In the Halswell Drama Group, there are people who come from Leeston, Lincoln, Rolleston, West Melton. There is nothing in Rolleston so to speak. If something happened here I think it would be wellreceived. What has it been like putting The Wedding Singer together? I live and breathe it pretty much. Planning is high on the list, creativity and with the support of many others. It does take a village to put on the show. That is the joy of community theatre.

You put so much effort into it and then you get it to the stage and go wow all that work was worth it. It is is a good feeling knowing audiences are enjoying it. Did you ever work in another industry or have you always been involved in the arts? I worked in retail. I started working in a music shop and I sold musical instruments, records, tapes and CDs – way back in the day. I did a bit of a stint in furniture and a stint in a hardware store but once I moved to Rolleston in 2004, I did a bit of music teaching as well. What do you think of the Rolleston community? It is so different compared to when I first got here. When I first arrived there was only one primary school, one supermarket and literally within the first two years of my girls going to

another. I think within in the last couple of years, with Selwyn arts coming to the floor more, I think it would be well received. There are so many people out in Rolleston now. Sometimes people don’t want to travel 3040min to do something, they want it on their doorstep. Tell me about your children? I remarried four or five years ago. I have got my two girls from the previous marriage and from the next marriage I have one son. One of my daughters – Nikita – is very much into theatre she is in The Wedding Singer and has been in the Halswell Drama Group for the last four to five shows. She plays a lot of instruments. She loves it so much and my husband Darren has been the musical director for the past few shows for the Kirwee Players and was in he band for The Wedding Singer. My husband is in a cover band called General Admission. He is head of music department at Lincoln High School. My other daughter Brittany loves playing the guitar and she has done many years of dance. More recently in the last few years guitar has become more of a focus for her. I am sure little Sam will grow up doing a bit of music stuff.

School pool to be demolished •From page 1 “I always thought with the growing roll of the school one day the MoE will come knocking and say we want land to put another building on . . . unfortunately that day has come.” Principal Kim Alexander said the pool wasn’t suitable for swimming lessons because it was deep in the middle and designed like a diving pool. She said the board of trustees supported MoE’s decision to remove it because the space could be maximised. The decision has also been supported by the district council. District council’s community relations manager Denise Kidd said while the district council is in the process of reviewing its aquatic facilities plan, it was not contemplating a replacement pool for Prebbleton. “The plan indicates that the demand from Prebbleton can

be met through the planned expansion of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre,” she said. But Prebbleton resident Stephanie Broomhall said she was concerned the community was not consulted on the closure. She is one of several Prebbleton residents who want the pool to stay open. “My kids get such enjoyment in the summer going down to the pool and having a swim. Call for slower speed in Kirwee By Georgia O’Connor-Harding KIRWEE’S CHIEF fire officer wants urgent action taken on an intersection he says is a death trap. Stuart Jones is calling for the speed limit on State Highway 73 within the Kirwee township to be lowered from 70km/h to 50km/h to improve safety at the Courtenay Rd intersection. “I have been there 40 years and there have been numerous accidents. Nobody has been killed there but they are about to be,” Mr Jones said. It comes after a boom in traffic over the past six years, with the average number of vehicles travelling through Kirwee increasing by about 1700 per day. New Zealand Transport Agency data shows the average daily traffic count on State Highway 73 south of Kirwee had grown from 3909 in 2011 to 5626 in 2016. But changes to the speed limits are unlikely. NZTA senior traffic and safety engineer David Scarlet said the numbers recorded indicated few crashes at the intersection and consequently little need for intervention. In the past six years NZTA

More jobs created in Hornby ABOUT 40 new jobs will be created in Hornby when a 28,551 sq m supermarket distribution centre is built. The Foodstuffs temperature-controlled building in Hickory Pl will be completed in March 2019. The first stage is expected to be open in August next year. The centre will offer between 30 to 40 new jobs in order picking, inventory control, forklift drivers and truck drivers. Foodstuffs bought the land in 2010, started planning in 2014 and are expecting the first stage to be complete in August 2018. Big turnout for water seminars

MORE THAN 1000 people have attended a attended a seminar series held to address waterrelated issues in the district. The series was established to reduce tensions between Environment Canterbury and residents over how water issues in the Selwyn-Waihora catchment are managed. The Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee reported last week that its concluded seminar series at Lincoln University had attracted at least 1000 people and that it would be examining feedback received to inform future water-related strategies and programmes. The series addressed issues including the state of water quality and quantity, and the impact of land-use intensification in the district. Between 70 and 130 people attended each session (the seminar ran twice each day), with some travelling from as far afield as Ashburton. Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee Chair Allen Lim said he felt very positive about the experience and looked forward to considering all the feedback received.

Adams thrilled with easy win By Georgia O’Connor-Harding and Bridget Rutherford AMY ADAMS reaffirmed her dominance in Saturday’s general election, securing the Selwyn seat for the fourth straight term. The West Melton resident, who is no 7 on National’s list, won the seat with a 17,625 majority over Labour’s Tony Condon. She secured 66 per cent of the electorate’s candidate votes. “I am thrilled, effectively it is about two-thirds of all votes cast. Tony Condon It is an incredible privilege to get that level of support. It is a real message that the community is pleased with the way I represented them,” she said. Ms Adams secured 25,320 votes, while Mr Condon received 7695. She had the second largest majority in the country, after National’s Mark Mitchell who won the Rodney electorate with 17,678. “I don’t worry myself too much about it. What is important to me is my community has

given me a strong mandate to continue as their representative and that is something I take very seriously.” Ms Adams has held the traditionally blue seat since 2008. Her majority decreased from 20,561 in the 2014 election. But she said that was not a reflection on her campaign. “My votes have actually stayed very consistent . . . it is more of a sign of Labour running a better campaign than what they did last time,” Ms Adams said. National secured 60 per cent of the party vote in Selwyn, compared with 63 per cent in

2014. Labour increased its party vote to 25.5 per cent this year, from 12.9 per cent in 2014. Mr Condon said he was pleased he was able to boost Labour’s party vote in the electorate. He said because Selwyn had always been a blue electorate, it wasn’t a seat many people wanted to put their hands up for, but he was happy with his campaign. “I thought we did really well.” Mr Condon said he would run again in the 2020 general election and will look to start campaigning again in about two months.

But wait, I can hear the ranks of the righteous screaming ‘but it’s the demon alcohol and that makes it different’. Yes, alcohol is different, it’s the ‘legal’ drug of choice for the masses. More of the population enjoy consuming it in some form or other responsibly than don’t, and we hear about the don’t often enough. Interestingly, if you look at the statistics on alcohol consumption on average, it has been steadily declining for years. Which brings me to my point. If there isn’t enough room for another alcohol outlet then surely they simply won’t survive in the market place, with their demise hastened by the residents of Lincoln who don’t want it there simply not frequenting that store? But again, that’s not how society seems to work these days, we must be protected from ourselves by people with degrees in something, or just plain busybodies who know what’s best for us. Put sanctions on those who abuse alcohol and leave the rest of us to enjoy life, with a tipple or two if we so choose.

A resident responds to a Selwyn Times article about a bus service between Leeston and Christchurch Sue Walders – Seeing the article on the need for a service to Leeston I wish them luck. I saw a small red bus in Lyttelton last weekend which could be ideal for a smaller number of patrons. That may be all that Leeston needs. I have been writing to the powers that be about our service in Prebbleton. I accept that we only have one route, but since the change at the last review, we are no longer able to get to Church Corner. Many people in Prebbleton

(and maybe Lincoln) have doctors, dentists and banks there. I was told that the change was to cut traffic congestion in Riccarton. Our bus actually rejoins Riccarton Rd at Wharenui Rd so passes Westfield Riccarton where the maximum traffic passes. I would like the route to pass The Hub Hornby and/or Church Corner, which are the two nearest shopping malls. There are more buses from Hornby so I suggested one of those could be diverted to the Blenheim Rd section as they have a choice we do not. It is very hard to find out when the next review of routes will be so residents can have the chance to have their say.

Native plant art on show PAINTINGS AND drawings of native plants will star in Darfield’s Selwyn Gallery from tomorrow. The exhibition is part of a larger body of work called the Canterbury Plains Florilegium, an illustrated record of indigenous plants. In modern terms the word florilegium means a collection of botanically correct illustrations of plants-in this case from Riccarton Bush and the Canterbury Plains. The national significance of Riccarton Bush makes this exhibition important because it is the sole remnant of Kahikatea flood plain forest in Canterbury. Malvern Community Arts Council chairman Philip Baldwin said part of its interest in this exhibit is botanical art can act as the interface between art and science. “It gives viewers an aesthetic experience and also educates them about the botanical subjects on display,” he said. The art works on exhibit were created by members of the Botanical Art Society of NZ from 2010 to 2013. The exhibition was created to help celebrate the 150th birthday of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

Risk of texting and driving acknowledged NEARLY 75 per cent of Selwyn residents acknowledge the high risk involved in texting while driving – when drivers focus on their phone, they’re not focused on the road. THat’s one of the findings of a recent survey carried out by the district council, which is getting on board with the nationwide Drive Phone Free campaign. The campaign aims to increase driver awareness that talking on the phone, texting or even checking a hand-held mobile phone while driving puts them and other road users at risk. The survey also found more than 50 per cent of people knew when the cellphone law came into legislation.

The same amount knew what the penalty for using a hand-held cellphone while driving was. The district council’s road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning said it’s not just ourselves we have to think about when driving. “We can all do our part in increasing road safety by not using phones in any way when driving, but we should also encourage others to do the same,” she said. In November 2009 a law was introduced making it illegal to use hand-held mobile phones while driving. This includes making, receiving or terminating a phone call, creating, sending or even reading a text or email and creating,

sending or viewing a video message. Hands-free devices are often considered as a solution to minimise the risk of driver distraction. A district council media release said while handsfree devices decrease visual risk (taking drivers off the road), it does not minimise cognitive distraction meaning drivers’ minds are not focused on the road. The district council is asking residents to keep an eye on its Facebook page over the next month for weekly posts and prizes to be won to encourage drivers to drive phone-free. Residents can also pick up their free cellphone screen cleaner from council library and service centres or from rural garages.

Author kept busy with questions WEST MELTON School had a special visit from author Malcolm Clarke. Last Tuesday, pupils got to meet the author and hear him read his new book Tume KeTūī! The illustrated book has a message about friendship between two native New Zealand birds and the environment. Grants for rugby club and parenting group TWO ORGANISATIONS in Selwyn have received funding from the Rata Foundation. The foundation has granted $10,000 to Southbridge Rugby Football Club and $15,000 to the Selwyn Parenting Network Inc. The funding will go towards the rugby club’s development officer salary and the parenting network’s operating costs. The club’s president Chris McMillan said support from local funders is important to the club’s success. Rugby has had its reputation tarnished recently but the Southbridge club stands as a great example of all that is good about the sport. It has long been known as a multicultural club. Mr McMillan said the club, which has in the past been the target of some nasty and personal attacks from individuals outside of Southbridge, has worked hard on and off the field on how to deal with racial abuse. Canterbury Rugby Football Union investigated Waihora’s Bronson Munro last year after he used a racial slur towards Southbridge’s Peni Manumanuniliwa in a club game. It handed down a 46-week

ban for the former South Island Maori representative. Mr McMillan said improvements this season had been noticeable around the club, particularly with the support of the CRFU’s We All Bleed Red campaign – a positive step towards stamping out racial abuse in the game. “We’re really pleased to see how seriously this campaign is being taken and it’s good to know we are not alone,” he said. The intention of the club is to offer and create a better and improved pathway for country players, coaches and volunteers. Mr McMillan said having a rugby development officer has

made a huge difference and the club is planning to have an academy up and running by next year. It will see the development of 11 to 18-year-old players in the Ellesmere area and will run in the pre-season. Meanwhile, the Selwyn Parenting Network is a nonprofit organisation working alongside families in the district to connect them to social and community networks. Selwyn is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, but it’s a relatively fragmented community with small towns situated across a vast geographical area.

COMMUNITY: The Selwyn Parenting Network was granted $15,000 to support the organisation’s operating costs.

Selwyn Parenting Network committee chairwoman Kerryn Stokes said families are a vital part of the district’s communities. The network aims to strengthen families by enabling

them to thrive within the area. “Our aim is provide opportunities to all families at low or no cost. To do this, we rely solely on funding and are very lucky to have great relationships with our funders,” she said.

Breath-taking beech forests, traverses, ridgeline clearings and 360° views. The track is 7.8km and suitable for fit individuals, but not buggies or wheelchairs. Drive safe, drive phone free Nearly 75% of Selwyn residents acknowledge the high risk involved in texting while driving – when drivers focus on their phone, they’re not focused on the road. That’s one of the findings of a recent survey carried out by Selwyn District Council, which is getting on board with the nationwide Drive Phone Free campaign. The campaign aims to increase driver awareness that talking on the phone, texting or even checking a hand held mobile phone while driving puts them and other road users at risk. With cellphones now a large part of many people’s lives it can be difficult to ignore them when driving, however it is important to remember to put them away. In November 2009 a law was introduced making it illegal to use hand-held mobile phones while driving. This includes: · making receiving or terminating a phone call

Site of new West Melton facility blessed Karakia and kapa haka could be heard throughout West Melton on Wednesday last week, as the site of the new Community and Recreation Centre was blessed. Construction of the new $5.8M facility is set to begin at the end of the month, and is expected to be completed late next year. West Melton Community and Recreation Centre Committee chair, Bruce Russell, says the blessing was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the hard work that has gone in to making the new facility a reality. “We received a Rata Foundation grant of $250,000 and the community itself raised $120,000 towards the new facility – I’m really proud of the way West Melton residents got behind this project and helped this four-year project come to fruition,” Mr Russell says.

Celebrating growing diversity aim of festival

Search on for Civil Defence volunteers THE DISTRICT council is looking for volunteers to join its new Selwyn Civil Defence Response Team. The team will provide the district council with additional capability during an emergency. This includes helping with evacuations, sandbagging, light rescue, reconnaissance, cordon management and community needs assessment. A media spokesman said it is always looking for more volunteers to help respond to an emergency. “Selwyn already has about 30 community response teams and this is to supplement that,” he said. District council’s emergency management team leader Ryan O’Rourke said it is on the lookout for people with a background in rescue, but also for those who are enthusiastic about serving their community and who are willing to commit to the required training. “We need people who can operate in physically and mentally challenging environments within a small team. They must also have excellent communication skills and be able to follow instructions,” he said.

CULTUREFEST 2017 is being held on Sunday and it will be an opportunity to celebrate growing diversity in the district. After last year’s inaugural event, CultureFest is back to showcase everything great about the district’s growing communities. The event will be presented by the district council in partnership with the Rotary Club of Lincoln and the Christchurch Multi Cultural Council. There will be more than 20 stage performances by groups from around the world. Some are from China, Latin America, Russia, Poland, Iran, India, and Brazil. Residents will also have the chance to sample dishes from 15 countries including India, Spain, Germany, Nigeria, Malaya, Morocco, Jordan, Iran, Russia and Ukraine. Arts, crafts and dances will also be part of the festival. The festival will be held at the Lincoln Event Centre and Lincoln Domain from 11am to 4pm.

Volunteers must have a full car driver licence and be able to commit to evening training weekly, and monthly weekend training activities.

There are a number of other response teams already operating in Canterbury which have responded to major civil defence emergencies including the Christchurch earthquake, the Kaikoura/ Hurunui earthquake, the Port Hills fire and numerous flood events.

Destructive aphids Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us

THE CABBAGE aphid brevicoryne brassicae is a greyish-white species that is a pest of brassica species, including cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower. The powdery appearance is a waxy substance produced by the aphid which contains a strong mustard oil chemical to ward off predators. The aphid species is 2-2.5mm long and adults can be winged or wingless. They are native to Europe but are now found around the world. Cabbage aphids can go through at least 15 generations per year and a single aphid can produce 25 nymphs that can reach large numbers very quickly in summer.

THE ROTARY Club of Lincoln doesn’t just help the district’s community. It is also enthusiastic about giving a helping hand to other nations. Its “backyard” of South Pacific islands is on the top of the list. For example, a recent trip to Samoa by club member Gavin Morgan and his wife Paula provided an opportunity to help. The couple stayed at the Return to Paradise Resort in the village of Matautu Lefaga. During a guided tour of the village and Matautu Gagaifo Primary School, Mr Morgan asked if there was anything the club could help the school with. He found out it was in bad

need of teaching material, specifically computers to provide visual aids to the children. On returning to New Zealand, Mr Morgan approached one of his friends, Canned Computers Company owner Ross Burgess. Mr Burgess donated six reconditioned laptops to the cause. Other members of the club gave donations of stationery or helped with the freight cost. Crate training pets Crate training is an effective way to house-train puppies, dogs and cats. Just like an indoor kennel, many vets recommend crate training where a comfortable happy place is created for your pet. Once crate trained, puppies and other pets often choose to continue using the crate as a haven throughout their life with many dogs putting themselves to bed in the crate even during the day. A comfortable crate provides your pet with a secure den-like environment,

helping to prevent destructive behaviours such as chewing inappropriate or dangerous items like electrical sockets or wires, when unsupervised. Several types of crates are available to purchase. The key is to ensure the crate is large enough to accommodate your pet lying down and turning around. There should also be room for water, food bowls and a litter tray for a cat, as dogs and cats prefer not to soil where they sleep. If your puppy is a large breed, consider purchasing a crate that he or she will still fit in, when fully grown. To train a pet to use a crate, associate it with positive things. Using the crate to house-train a puppy is easy. Feed your puppy in the crate and when they have finished their meal, immediately take your puppy outside to urinate and defaecate. Your puppy will quickly learn their routine so gradually extend the time between bathroom breaks so your puppy eventually sleeps through the night and waits until early morning to go outside to toilet. Like all training, start with short periods of time in the crate say 30 minutes to one hour. Over the course of a few weeks, slowly increase the amount of time your puppy spends in the crate, endeavouring to ignore any protests. They will slowly settle down. Puppies younger than four months of age, should not spend more than four hours at a time in a crate unless at night for sleeping. If you work full-time, try to arrange to have someone let your puppy out to the toilet during the day as each time a puppy has an accident in the crate it will take longer to be toilet trained. Of course, accidents will happen so remove the soiled bedding and remember that over time, you will be doing this less frequently. Once your puppy

is doing really well with toilet training, gradually increase the time your puppy is running free in your home. Consult your veterinary practice staff for advice if soiling continues for too long. Lastly, always ensure there is clean water in the crate.

After years of service as a Cadbury’s chocolate delivery vehicle, Michael’s 1948 International KB3 red truck is still providing good service. These trucks were first sold as a cab and chassis so before being put to work on the chocolate run, a van body was fitted on the back. When decommissioned from Cadbury’s in the 1980s, a wooden flat deck was fitted for service on a farm with the truck spending 10 years in Ashburton before Michael purchased it and brought it to Selwyn. The truck has a flathead straight 6 motor and green diamond engine. Different colours were given to the various engines depending on their cc rating and this one is a 214 cubic inch, GD 214 and 3,495 cc. The truck, which is in its original condition, is still handy on the land. Michael says it is not

In the 1900s, the International Harvester Company was a household name in farming, manufacturing amongst other things, trucks and agricultural machinery including a stationary motor. Michael who enjoys preserving old technology and introducing his children to the way things were once done, purchased his 1926 Model M 3 horse-power stationary motor a year ago. He says his children find the simplicity of early 1900s machinery intriguing. Stationary motors were used for tasks such as pumping water and powering milking machines on dairy farms. It was a time before people had electricity. The motor has a two pot chamber at the top. The first is filled with petrol to start the machine then kerosene flows over from the second chamber and pumps through to keep the motor running. Using kerosene was more economical than petrol, which was expensive at the time. Michael says the motor has been restored in the past so is quite presentable albeit minus a few parts. He purchased it to accompany a vacuum pump produced by Mason and Porter Company (now known as Masport), which would have been used for running a dairy milking machine.

Bee on guard Rebecca Lees says you don’t have to be a beekeeper to witness the wonders of guard bees. SIT AND watch a hive from close by, and you’ll witness behaviours you may have never seen. The entrance to a bee colony is a hive of activity. There’s a lot going on, but you have to be quick to see it. Bees work at a rapid pace. The more you watch, the more fascinating their behaviour becomes. In very cold weather you may only glimpse a few heads poking out. Make a little noise, and more will appear. The curious little bees we see at the entrance are doing an important job. They’re guarding the hive. Watching the ins and outs of the place, and it’s up to them who’s granted access. Usually around two to three weeks old, these young worker bees take turns on patrol. At times when nectar flow is high and plenty of bees take to their air – guarding decreases. During cooler weather, when their population is low and nectar not flowing freely, the guards are out in force. They have to be, their hive is at risk. Any creature can enter a hive, as long as it fits through the entrance. Mice squeeze through with ease.

Wasps have no problem. Even bumblebees, larger than life, will fit. It’s the guard’s job to make sure this doesn’t happen. But when it does – and it will – they’ll defend their family and, if need be, fight to the death. Guards will often stand with their forelegs raised and antennae forward. The bigger the entrance to the hive, the more bees on guard. They’re on high alert to carry out regular inspections of incoming bees. As a bee approaches a hive it flies in a particular way. Bees which belong to the hive they’re visiting have a more direct and consistent flying pattern. Foreign bees approach the hive differently. They’re checking things out. Searching for the entrance. Depending on the species, they’ll hover more or dart this way and that trying to find a way in. This flying pattern alerts the guards to take a closer look, and inspect the intruder. Each colony of bees has a unique odour, made of a mix of chemicals. Guards use this odour as a recognition mechanism. If the odour is foreign, as detected by the

guard bee’s antennae, the intruder is chased away from the hive. The intruder may make a quick getaway and get off scot-free, but there are those who are really desperate to get in, and they’ll keep trying. This is when a battle takes place. A guard will fight with the intruder. If need be (and if the fight works in the bee’s favour), the intruder will be stung. That’s when the real alarm bells ring. On stinging the intruder the guard bee releases alarm pheromones. These pheromones are another concoction of chemical substances. They’re an important communication mechanism on which the colony depends for its survival. As the pheromone is released other worker bees pick up on the alarm signal. It gets their attention and changes their behaviour. They come out of the hive and join the battle. This form of SOS often works well. The more intruders stung, the more alarm pheromones released. Take care of your blueberries and they will thrive and ericas, all of which prefer acidic fertilisers as opposed to sweet ones. So, avoid lime, blood and bone, and nitrogen-based fertilisers, and instead look for acid plant food.

Rachel Vogan unearths the tips and tricks of growing blueberries AS A child, I always thought blueberries were some sort of exotic fruit, as I only ever saw references to them on TV programmes such as The Waltons or Little House on the Prairie. Little did I know that they were already being cultivated in New Zealand. It was during my first horticultural apprenticeship that I first learnt about propagating and growing blueberries on a commercial scale. By taking cuttings in late summer, which often coincided with the plants fruiting, meant it was no hardship to collect the cutting material, and I could have a sneaky feed at the same time. As snacks go, blueberries are one of the healthiest and tastiest you can grow yourself, and they thrive throughout the country. Which to grow While most varieties have some level of self-fertility, it is always wise to get into the habit of planting at least two plants. Choose another variety which flowers at the same time to ensure good pollination results, as this will lead to a higher fruit set and

therefore a larger total harvest. Blueberries can be classified into three types, which indicate their flowering habits, growth characteristics and which regions they are best suited to, along with fruiting times. Northern highbush – these flower in mid-spring, fruit in December and January, and are suitable for all regions that have cold winters. Look for the varieties Blueberry Muffin, Bluecrop, Dixi, Duke, Elliot, Jersey, Nui, Puru and Reka. Southern highbush – these flower in late winter, then fruit anytime between October and February, and are suited to all areas north of Canterbury. They are ideal for the northern regions where the winters are not so cold, as they do not require as much cold weather to stimulate flower buds. Varieties include Island Blue, Marimba, Misty, O’Neal and Summer Blue. Rabbiteye – these flower in early spring, with fruit appearing from January through until April. These are suitable for most regions that have warm temperatures well into the autumn. In some cold areas where

winter arrives early, the fruit may not fully ripen if temperatures cool off early. Varieties include Centurion, Climax, Delite, Powder Blue, Southland, Tiff Blue, Blue Dawn, Blue Magic and Blueberry Burst. Underground – the root department Blueberries have a very shallow root system, and don’t like having their root zone tampered with. This means that mulching is vital to avoid the soil heating up and drying out, especially during the warmer months while the fruit is developing and

It can be tempting to pick them as soon as the colour begins to darken, but patience will reward you with more flavoursome berries if you wait. Berries form in clusters (small groups), and ripen at different stages on the cluster, so be careful when picking them, as you don’t want to knock off unripe berries.

Pruning Blueberries have a steady growth rate; you can expect your plant to roughly double in size each season with the right watering, mulching and feeding regime. They are not fussy about pruning either, so do it either before the leaves appear in late winter or spring, or wait until after the fruiting season has finished. In spring, the pretty creamy pink, bell-shaped flowers appear on older season’s wood, often on short, stumpy spurs. Be careful not to prune these off, as it will take another full year’s growth to develop that wood again.

The joys, rewards and sense of self-satisfaction provided by a dirty weekend in the garden are numerous – the wait is over, spring is here. Stretch your arms above your head and get ready to launch into action outdoors. In the warmer regions, where the soil is dry enough, start planting out your vegetable patches now, but if you are in a cooler area and the soil still squelches under your boots, give it a few more weeks. Working and planting in the soil when it is wet does more harm that good, so hold off.

Just because it is spring, it doesn’t mean that Jack Frost has moved on – in the wake of cold, wet periods, frosts can lurk until November in some parts of the country. Young seedlings can be protected from frost with small cloches, plastic covers or by using frost cloth. If it feels like a cold one, tuck your plants up for the night.

Roses, roses and more roses As soon as the new growth starts to appear, keep a close eye out for aphids and greenfly, as these little sap-suckers will spoil your blooms overnight by chewing out the petals of the developing buds. A rose spray programme helps prevent

major issues. New roses are aplenty now in the shops. Fertilise existing roses with rose fertiliser, which is available everywhere from hardware stores and supermarkets to garden centres.

Have your planted out your new-season fruit trees yet? The shops are still brimming with an excellent selection of deciduous trees, berries and currants, and many apples, peaches, nectarines and apricots are now available on dwarf rootstocks. This means the trees do not grow as big as usual, but while the plant may be petite, the fruit remains the same size. If space is at a premium, grow your fruit trees in larger grow bags or wine barrels, the portability making them extra convenient should you need to move them. If you don’t have any room, why not offer to donate one to your local community garden, where you can share the fruits of your TASTY: Add a nectarine tree to your garden. crops with other like-minded people.

You will start to see a real flush of growth this month, and as soon as this appears you know it is time to weed and feed your lawn. These combination sprays are available everywhere, and the beauty of them is that they kill the weeds whilst fertilising the lawn. Don’t go overboard – make sure to apply at the recommended

date, and be mindful of the fact that overuse can cause burn-off. Prepare new lawn areas for sowing now by spraying off the area and raking it level, apply lawn fertiliser before sowing and protecting the area afterwards so pets, kids and cars do not accidentally park and mark your new turf.

Do I need to put weedmat down before I apply my bark?

Weedmat will definitely help to reduce weeding time in the garden, especially if you are only putting a thinner layer of bark on. If you apply a 10cm layer of bark, you don’t really need weedmat, as long as you continue to top it up as it breaks down. If you want the extra security of it, adding weedmat before your 10cm layer of bark will definitely not do any harm. There are a few key things to make sure you do once you have decided to use weedmat.

 Choose a good quality one. The water still needs to get through, and the soil still needs airflow, and it needs to stop the weeds.  When you apply it, make sure that you use pins to secure it. If the weed mat moves, the weeds will come through and make the whole exercise fairly pointless (see bottom right image).  Apply the bark straight after you have applied it. Don’t give the weed seeds time to land on top of the weedmat. The more time you spend getting it right from the start, the less time you will spend pulling weeds out and fixing loose weedmat.

What do you have to tell potential buyers when selling your house? When you’ve lived in a property for a while it’s easy to forget some of its quirks. You might be used to the fact that the front gate doesn’t shut properly, or that the bathroom windows need fixing. Any potential buyers will be able to spot issues like this when they inspect the property – and can choose to fix them if they purchase it. But it’s a lot harder for them to identify other things you might have forgotten about, like the fact that you didn’t bother getting the appropriate consents from the council when you built the deck 25 years ago. You might think the deck is fine, but you need to front up about the consent issue, not least because it’s the decent thing to do. “When you’re selling a property you are legally obliged to share all the relevant information about it,” says Kevin LampenSmith, chief executive of the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). “If work has been done on the property during your ownership, either by you or someone else, the standard terms of the sale and purchase agreement require the seller to warrant that any legally required permits or consents were obtained. If you knowingly fail to disclose unconsented works, you are in breach of contract. This means there is a risk that the sale could fall over or that you could run into problems prior to settlement. Even worse, the buyer could take you to court for breach of warranty.”

Your first step should be to discuss the issue with your licensed real estate agent and your lawyer, Lampen-Smith says. They are likely to advise that you are better off to disclose anything unconsented, or to strike out the applicable vendor warranties clause in the sale and purchase agreement. “Once the real estate agent is aware of the situation, they are bound by their Code of Conduct to disclose it to any prospective buyers. If you tell them about the deck or any other issues to do with the property, but ask them not to tell anyone, they are required to stop working for you.” Similar disclosure issues can arise over more sensitive matters. Some sellers worry about whether or not to tell an agent or prospective buyers about an issue that doesn’t relate to the physical state of the property – such as it being the scene of a murder, suicide or violent crime. Here, deciding what to disclose is less straightforward, Lampen-Smith says. “The REAA advises agents to take a cautious approach and to consider each situation on its facts, while recognising the individual circumstances.” The High Court has said that a more recent event, especially one that might have gained some notoriety in the local neighbourhood, may have more bearing on a prospective buyer’s view of the property than a historic one. The location of the event (whether it took place in the grounds of the property or inside the

Affordable First Home Ownership Opportunities in Faringdon Renting with an ownership outcome The New Zealand Housing Foundation is a charitable entity that has been providing real and innovative housing solutions for low and moderate income working households for over 14 years.

home ownership is a minimum of $10,000 which can include KiwiSaver first home deposit withdrawals and HomeStart grants where eligible. Households including children will have priority.

Its affordable housing ‘pathway’ programmes allow qualifying households to move into a new home and as their financial circumstances permit transition from renting to outright home ownership.

The full eligibility criteria for the Faringdon houses can be found on Housing Foundation’s website, www. housingfoundation.co.nz , under the Greater Christchurch housing project section.

Housing Foundation is now accepting registrations of Interest for three bedroom standalone houses it currently has under construction in Faringdon that will be available before Christmas 2017.

Housing Foundation has built almost 700 new houses for use in its assisted ownership programmes and for partner organisations. It also provides community building and advisory services to other housing providers.

Qualifying households will initially be able to rent a new home in Faringdon for up to five years. They will have first right to purchase an interest in the property within the 5 year rental period, once they can meet the Shared Ownership programme financial requirements.

In the last year 84 new homes have been completed, including 16 in the Greater Christchurch locations of Hornby, Awatea and Kaiapoi.

Applicants must not have had a previous interest in a house and be unable to purchase in the open market. An annual gross household income of between $55,000 and $95,000, depending on individual households’ circumstances, is required. The deposit requirement to transition to shared
